The Christian religious holidays of All Saints and All Souls have a long tradition. In ancient times Celtic fire festivals were held at the time of transition from autumn to winter. The souls of the dead were invited to the hearth to be warmed and fed by the living. Similar traditions exist in Latin America, as well. In the secular world this has become Halloween. In the Christian tradition this has become All Saints Day. On November 6 we will remember those who have died, and especially those during this past year. Names, prayers, silence, and candle-lighting will be a part of our worship as we remember those who have gone before us.

7:00 p.m. Longest Night Service

Feeling out of sync with the holiday frenzy? Longing for sacred silence and candlelight instead of (or in addition to) crowded malls and holiday parties? Please join us for Broadview/Keystone/St. Paul’s annual Longest Night worship service on Sunday, December 18 at 7:00 pm at St. Paul’s. Pastor Tim and Peg Faulmann from Keystone will be worship leaders, and Carol Banach will lead a choir. Nursery childcare will be available if requested by noon on Thursday, December 15. Reception follows.

10 am worship and childcare at Broadview Community United Church of Christ, 325 N 125th, Seattle.

There will be no worship at St. Paul's on this Sunday. Some members from St. Paul's, Kirkland Congregational UCC, and Broadview will be at Pilgrim Firs Camp and Conference Center for our annual Labor Day retreat. Others will be at worship at 10 am Sunday at Broadview to welcome you!

Family Night Potluck

Pastor Tim and David Anderson will be participating in a “Summer Collegium” at Virginia Theological Seminary, themed “a project in support of small congregations.”

One of the things that we all are being asked to do by the leadership of the upcoming Collegium is to hold a gathering where we explore a congregational timeline, looking over the memories that we hold as a community. Such an exercise can be quite helpful in remembering our stories, the values that hold us together, and the hopes that keep us going. We will have a Family Night potluck at 6:00 pm in Foster Hall on Saturday, June 12. The program exercise will follow, childcare will be available, and we expect to finish by 8:30 pm.

Questions to be thinking about include:

• What traditions or activities were favorites, and why?

• Who were the leaders and “characters” of the congregation?

• What do you recall about worship, and about the people who led it?

• What were the crises, and how did people pitch in?

• What were the disagreements in the church/community; how did they turn out?

• What was the congregation best known for, and how has that changed?

Please plan to participate if you can – it is a great way to remember as well as to learn!

11:00 a.m. Christmas Pageant

CHRISTMAS PAGEANT – DECEMBER 18 A simple Christmas pageant/tableaux will be part of our worship Service on Sunday, December 18. All ages are invited to come to the Loft at St. Paul’s before worship at 10:30 am to dress up in our church costumes as sheep, shepherds, angels, or even Mary or Joseph. Haley Philyaw and Casey Weitzel will narrate. Questions? Speak with Pastor Tim.

7:00 p.m. Christmas Eve Worship Service

On Christmas Eve all are invited to worship together at 7:00 pm in the Sanctuary. This will be a traditional service of candles, carols, readings, prayers, and a brief meditation. In addition, we will collect the annual UCC Christmas Fund offering. It is both a familiar and a special evening. Nursery childcare will be available. A simple reception will follow in the Narthex and Library.
